In the Bible, a fast almost exclusively refers to spending a designated period of time going without food and focused on being attentive to God. Sometimes, it was a fast from everything except water (Luke 4:2ff), and other times it was a fast only from specific luxuries, like meat or alcohol (Daniel 10:3).
Today, we might choose TV, social media, our phones, etc. But whatever is being given up, fasting is an opportunity to draw near to God and connect with Him in a special way.
We want to see God’s love more fully and more clearly.
We have an example of this from Jesus himself. He used fasting to focus His connection to the Father. That is our desire as we enter this practice together. First, we want to pray for more ongoing spiritual transformation. And we want to come away from fasting more confident that God is able and happy to supply all the spiritual needs of His people.
